Intercultural Learning Webinars for study abroad students

Can you picture yourself abroad? Are you ready to interact effectively and appropriately with the people in your host country or city? Have you learned about common patterns of cultural behavior and interaction styles, or developed a framework for how you might interpret different styles of behavior and interaction while abroad in order to improve your communication?
Webinars for study abroad students are intended to offer students a framework for thinking about crossing cultures so you can interact more effectively with your hosts. Unfortunately, the "study abroad bubble" is a very really phenomenon. Staying in a large group of students from your home school or country can distract from the very things you want to achieve abroad: meeting amazing people, learning about their lives and what makes them tick, getting to know a different culture in depth, and developing skills for improving interactions with people from other cultures.

The Presenter
Steven T. Duke, Ph.D., is Associate Vice President for Global Strategy and International Initiatives at the University of Nebraska, and President of the Institute for Cross-Cultural Teaching and Learning. He is the author of Preparing to Study Abroad: Learning to Cross Cultures (Stylus, 2014), a brief text designed to help students learn about cross-cultural learning while studying abroad. He has held positions in study abroad and international education at the University of Nebraska, Wake Forest University, Virginia Tech, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Brigham Young University, and Indiana University. At Wake Forest, he oversaw and taught three Cross-Cultural Engagement courses for study abroad students to help them improve their cross-cultural skills and awareness before, during and after their international experience. He facilitates workshops and professional development opportunities for faculty, education abroad professionals, and others who support students who study abroad.

- Identify the difference between “visible” and “less visible” culture (also known as objective and subjective culture);
- Describe why it is important for study abroad students to interact with local people while abroad;
- Recognize at least four things they can do now to prepare for purposeful cross-cultural interactions while abroad;
- Identify four or more strategies for cross-cultural success while studying and traveling abroad.
