The Need to Enhance Intercultural Learning
This three-hour virtual workshop will introduce education abroad staff and faculty leaders of study abroad programs to foundational intercultural theories and key findings from research on intercultural learning in education abroad programs.
Research on education abroad demonstrates the central role of ‘cultural mentoring’ to help students develop intercultural awareness and competence, especially as they study and live in increasingly diverse environments, and engage in the global workplace after graduation.
This research has also shown that simply traveling to another country or even being immersed in another culture does not cause students to develop intercultural competence or become more capable of interacting with individuals across language barriers or cultural difference. Intentionality in designing and facilitating intercultural learning experiences is essential.
The Institute for Cross-Cultural Teaching and Learning invites anyone who is interested in enhancing intercultural learning to attend this important three-hour virtual workshop, including faculty who lead programs, education abroad professionals and administrative colleagues. The workshop will take place online via Zoom, so participants will need internet access throughout the workshop.
